Leadership Insights in Short Bursts: Striking the Right Balance

Quick, Thought-Provoking Leadership Lessons for Today’s Fast-Paced World

Dear Clients and Colleagues,

Welcome to the new “Short Bursts (SBs)” format! Originally tailored for specific client needs, we are now expanding it to a broader audience. The world seems to be moving faster than ever, and it often feels like most people don’t have the time to dive deep into topics. But leadership requires a moment of reflection, and that’s what these bursts are all about.

A recent prospect, thankfully not a client, commented on a proposed 30-day service period, saying, “30 days? That’s a long time in business. The whole world could change in 30 days.” While that’s true, I assure you that the way you adapt and grow won’t move at such a fast pace. Now, let’s dive into some quick leadership insights:

1. Are You Balancing Online and Offline Engagement?

As a business leader, it’s crucial to strike the right balance between online and in-person engagement. While we all know that in-person conversations are essential for sensitive issues—like health, hiring, or performance—don’t forget the value of making that personal connection. Great leaders always take the time to respond, whether it’s through a call or an email. Real leadership is about connecting with individuals, not just broadcasting messages.

2. Do You Talk To Others, Or At Others?

This is a question that every leader, including myself, should ask from time to time. With our hyper-connected, fast-paced world, it’s easy to rush through conversations. However, real leadership often means asking good questions and then truly listening. It’s a valuable reminder to stop, be present, and engage with others meaningfully. A recent experience when someone asked me to “get a pen and paper” was a humbling reminder of the importance of attentive listening.

3. Public vs. Private Leadership: Do You Know the Difference?

In today’s world, the lines between public and private life are blurring. Many aspiring leaders fail to recognize the importance of maintaining integrity both in public and private settings. Leadership is about demonstrating character, even when no one is watching. A simple “hello” to a stranger on the street can make a big difference. After recent encounters with people whose attitudes seemed to show little regard for others, I believe the world could use more publicly inclined leadership.

4. Does Your Job Define You, or Do You Define the Job?

This age-old question remains relevant, especially for those at the top. Great leaders understand that they have the power to shape their roles, not just be shaped by them. The latest example comes from Home Depot’s new CEO, who will have to handle a major security breach shortly after taking office. It’s tough to strike a balance, but strong leaders don’t let the job define them—they bring their own vision and character to the role.

If these insights haven’t caught your attention, let me leave you with some wisdom from an unexpected source: Kermit the Frog. During an interview on “CBS This Morning,” Kermit shared some valuable advice: If you have a dream, don’t forget to share it with others so they can help make it come true.

The final piece of wisdom was my favorite: “Remember to spend some time in the big picture. Who knows? One day you might even be in one.” Kermit should know, right?

Happy leading. I look forward to hearing about how you’re handling your leadership challenges.

Best,
