Listening to Foster Loyalty

Listening to Foster Loyalty

Seems simple, right? Well, not quite.

In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, every tool we use—whether it’s a computer, phone, email, or Blackberry—pulls us further away from true listening. In fact, it often feels like everything around us is designed to hinder genuine communication.

So, why have we let this trend take root? The reasons are numerous. First, listening requires a level of focus and attention that many of us simply don’t have the time or energy for. It’s hard work, and often, we avoid it.

There’s also the emotional aspect to consider. Dealing with challenging personalities can trigger anxiety and fear. To paraphrase Emerson, our own egos and personalities often speak so loudly that we struggle to hear what others are trying to say.

Effective listening is more than just hearing words; it’s about understanding what’s left unsaid. That ability to “read between the lines” is rare, but those who master it often create lasting loyalty.

So, how can we become better listeners?

Step one: awareness. If you’re not connecting with someone or leaving a positive impact, you’re likely overlooking the fundamental rule of listening: actively thinking about what the other person is trying to communicate before responding.

Another helpful approach is to first understand what your audience doesn’t want to hear, then work your way back to what they do want to hear. People don’t typically seek confirmation for what they don’t want to know. But by reframing your message in a way that resonates with them, it’s often possible to find common ground without compromising your own message.

So, try making “listening to create loyalty” your resolution for 2025. It might just be the goal that no one else has already listened to.
