You’re No Donald Trump
“This isn’t personal. It’s just business.”
Those words still echo in my mind from a tough budget negotiation last September. Unfortunately, for some, this is standard practice. If you’ve ever said something similar, here’s a reality check: You’re no Donald Trump.
Business is Always Personal
Business isn’t just about numbers and deals—it’s an emotive, personal statement. The companies and individuals who understand this flourish, while those who don’t? They may find success, but often at the expense of others. Rarely do their actions leave a lasting, positive imprint that says, “built to last.”
Reputation is Everything
Most businesspeople—regardless of industry—are decent, caring, and understanding. They are friends, colleagues, neighbors, and connections in your network. Even in today’s dispersed world, your circle of influence is tighter and more transparent than you might think.
Your reputation depends almost entirely on two things:
✅ Performance
✅ Building customer/client loyalty
Without a personal stamp, achieving long-term loyalty is incredibly difficult. No matter what you’re selling—Internet services, stocks, or job candidates—you can’t separate business from the personal.
Drop the Pretense
This doesn’t mean that every business relationship must turn into a deep friendship. Not every interaction will result in a personal bond, and that’s okay. But adopting a “personal-first, business-second” mindset can change everything.
As you navigate business and relationships this holiday season, try making it personal. You’ll be amazed at the results.
And if you need more proof? Consider this quote from Warren Buffett after purchasing Borsheim’s Jewelry:
“If you don’t know the jewelry, know the jeweler.”
